The California State University Employee Update

New Presidents Named at Fresno, Los Angeles
Joseph I. Castro, vice chancellor of Student Academic Affairs at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), was named president of CSU Fresno, and William A. Covino, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at CSU Fresno, was named president of CSU Los Angeles this week by the Board of Trustees.

Castro has served in his current position since 2010, and was previously vice provost and associate vice chancellor for Student Academic Affairs at UCSF. He will succeed retiring President John D. Welty, who has served Fresno since 1991.

Prior to his current position, Covino was provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at CSU Stanislaus. He will succeed retiring President James A. Rosser, who has served Los Angeles since 1979.

In addition to the new presidents, three interim presidents were made permanent by the board:
• Willie J. Hagan will lead CSU Dominguez Hills where he has served as interim since June 2012;
• Eduardo M. Ochoa will be president at CSU Monterey Bay, serving as interim since July 2012; and
• Joseph F. Sheley will head up CSU Stanislaus where he has been interim since June 2012.

CSU Alumni Favorable About their Education
Ninety three percent of CSU alumni rated their decision to attend the CSU positively on a nationally normed alumni attitude study presented to the Board of Trustees this week. More than 20,000 alumni from 19 campuses participated in the study, giving the CSU high marks for achieving its mission of access, success, and workforce preparation.

This is the second time the CSU has participated in the study, which was spearheaded by the CSU Alumni Council—the representative voice of the 2.8 million alumni, which plays an active role in helping shape CSU policy. The CSU Alumni Council will align its strategic plan with the major survey findings, including targeted programs for students and recent alumni, career related programs, customized alumni communications and outreach to alumni who indicated their intention to support the university.

New Websites Highlight CSU Graduates, Chancellor White’s First Year
The significant impact of the CSU’s graduates is highlighted in a new website, 100,000 Strong. The site features profiles of students, honorary degree recipients, graduation facts, a photo gallery and links to campus commencement sites.

The First Year is also a new website that follows CSU Chancellor Timothy P. White as he travels the state and the nation visiting campuses, connecting with communities and advocating for the CSU.
