Institute for Sustainability
Hoping to bring awareness about the issues surrounding the use of hydraulic fracturing or “fracking,” California State University, Northridge’s Institute for Sustainability, will sponsor a screening of the film, “Gasland Part II,” and a panel discussion about the issue from 7 to 9:30 p.m., in the University Student Union’s Theater. Bianchi Planetarium
Come and learn about stars, constellations and planets visible in the sky during winter at “Winter Sky Show,” which takes place at 7:30 p.m. It is followed by “Light Years from Andromeda: A Journey between Two Galaxies Spans Human History – and Reveals the Secrets of the Cosmos.” General admission tickets are $6 for one show, $10 for two shows; students are $4 for one show and $7 for two shows.

Blenda J. Wilson Dedication
California State University, Northridge officials will dedicate a courtyard at 4 p.m. near the Donald E. Bianchi Planetarium in the center of the campus. Wilson served as CSUN’s president from 1992 to 1999 and is credited with bringing the university back from the devastating 1994 Northridge earthquake. She also furthered the university’s reputation as an institution that strongly supported the idea of academic freedom and stood behind student efforts to bring diverse and often controversial speakers to campus.

A Conversation with Gov. Michael Dukakis and Gov. Linda Lingle
Former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle and former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis will discuss their time in office, the challenges of contemporary governance and the importance of public service during a special presentation, at California State University, Northridge at 7 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union.

Black History Month at CSUN
The Department of Pan African Studies along with the Black Student Union will kick off a month of black history events on Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University Student Union’s Plaza del Sol with a Black History Month Fair. The fair will include an “open marketplace” featuring black clubs and organizations at CSUN.

San Fernando Valley Joint Higher Education Legislative Reception
California State University, Northridge President Dianne F. Harrison invite all to attend the inaugural San Fernando Valley Joint Higher Education Legislative reception, hosted by CSUN and UCLA, in partnership with Los Angeles Valley College, Pierce College and Los Angeles Mission College from 6 to 8 p.m. at  CSUN Valley Performing Arts Center.

Feb. 9
CSUN Hall of Fame
Three former outstanding CSUN student-athletes and one former Matador head coach are the latest members to be inducted into the CSUN Hall of Fame. The three student-athletes are Markus Carr (basketball), Lisa Erickson (softball), and Tereza Simonyan (tennis). The Matador head coach is Cliff Abel (track & field). The reception will be held at 11 a.m. at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel in Woodland Hills. Tickets are $60 per person, and $600 per table of ten.

Condolences

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and the campus community extends condolences to the family of Christine Smith, an emeritus faculty member who served as a professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences for more than 20 years. She passed away on Dec. 20. A celebration of Smith’s life will take place at CSUN’s Sequoia Hall 104 on Feb. 9 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made payable to CSUN Foundation (memo: Christine and Owen Smith Memorial Fund). Faculty and Staff Appointments and New Hires

Stan Charnofsky —Appointment
Stan Charnofsky has been appointed as acting chair of the Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling for spring 2014, effective Jan. 16. His term expires on May 23.

Rick Covington —Appointment
Rick Covington has been appointed as chair of the Department of Computer Science for a three-year term, effective Jan. 16. His term expires 2016-17.

Mangshar Hussein —Appointment
Mangshar Hussein has been appointed chair of the Department of Finance for a three-year term, effective Aug. 20. Her term will expire 2016-17.

The Department of Police Services will present a Building and Floor Marshal Training to provide CSUN employees emergency response training. The class is scheduled to take place from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Deadlines

2014-15 CSUN China Institute Faculty Development Grants

Faculty with an interest in China are invited to apply for initial seed money from the China Institute to start a project in their discipline that advances the field of China Studies or promotes long-term exchanges and collaboration for faculty and students. Applicants should explain how this grant may stimulate larger and longer range projects.  There will be two grants of $1,000 each, which can be used to support travel expenses for faculty visits to China to conduct their project. The deadline to apply is Feb. 3.
