17th Annual High School Student Invitational
The invitational exhibition showcases work made by students from nearly 40 San Fernando Valley high schools. Selected by members of each school’s art faculty, the work employs a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, illustration, and photography. The event exhibition runs through Feb. 1. The closing reception is Jan. 31 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Flu Shots Available by Appointment
This year’s seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine is available now until supplies run out for all CSUN students, faculty and staff by appointment at the Klotz Student Health Center. The vaccine may provide protection against three strains of influenza viruses. The cost is $15.

University Counseling Center Open House for Faculty and Staff
Faculty and staff members are key contributors to student success and as such wear many hats! The University Counseling Center’s professional staff is available as consultants to collaborate with you in your roles as professors, administrators, advisors, counselors and/or leaders of students. The center’s hours of operation for the month of October are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Bayramian Hall 520. Consultation involves a collegial relationship in which the consultant(s) deal exclusively with your work-related or student issues. Services are free and available to any academic department or administrative unit, as well as any individual staff or faculty members.

December Payroll Distribution
December pay warrants will be distributed in the lobby of Bayramian Hall on Tuesday, Dec. 31, from noon to 2 p.m. A form must be filled out and delivered to University Cash Services by Dec. 18. The form is available at University Cash Services or online. A CSUN photo identification is required in order to release your pay warrant. Employees unable to pick up checks may authorize someone to do so, in writing. Include the name of the authorized person, the employee’s department, the last four digits of the employee’s Social Security number and the employee’s signature. Uncollected checks will be available for department pick-up from noon to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2.

Condolences
Paul Tomasek
The Department of Biology and the campus community extends condolences to the family of Paul Tomasek.  He passed away on Nov. 30. Funeral services will take place at noon, Dec. 14 at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles.

Deadlines

2013-14 CSUN China Institute Faculty Development Grants
Faculty with an interest in China are invited to apply for initial seed money from the China Institute to start a project in their discipline that advances the field of China Studies or promotes long-term exchanges and collaboration for faculty and students. Applicants should explain how this grant may stimulate larger and longer range projects.  There will be two grants of $1,000 each, which can be used to support travel expenses for faculty visits to China to conduct their project.
