Elected officials from across the San Fernando Valley will join California State University, Northridge President Dianne F. Harrison and other university and college leaders on Thursday, Feb. 6, to discuss issues of importance to higher education and the community at large.

Among those expected to take part in the inaugural San Fernando Valley Joint Higher Education Legislative Reception are state Assemblymen Adrin Nazarian and Scott Wilk, Los Angeles City Councilmembers Bob Blumenfield, Mitch Englander, Felipe Fuentes and Paul Krekorian and Nury Martinez, state Senator Fran Pavley and Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.

The reception, scheduled to take place from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Valley Performing Arts Center, is hosted by CSUN and UCLA, in partnership with Los Angeles Valley College, Pierce College, Los Angeles Mission College and College of the Canyons.

“California State University, Northridge is pleased to host the inaugural Joint Higher Education Legislative Reception, co-sponsored with UCLA,” Harrison said. “The event presents an opportunity for community members to hear from their elected officials and be briefed on 2014 legislative and district initiatives, and provides our elected officials with the ideal setting to interact with their constituents and hear first-hand their perspectives and concerns.”

The evening’s format will be relatively simple, with short remarks by the elected officials about their 2014 priorities followed by a question-and answer period with Keith Parker, assistant vice chancellor for government and community relations at UCLA.

“This event is timely,” said Francesca M. Vega, CSUN’s director of government and community relations. “Bringing together our San Fernando Valley elected officials with their constituents in this joint effort with UCLA and area community colleges both highlights the importance of higher education to the region and opens up the discussion on policy issues we are facing on the local, state and federal level.”

Reservations are required to attend the event. To reserve a seat at the San Fernando Valley Joint Higher Education Legislative Reception, call CSUN’s Office of Special Events at (818) 677-1300 or email rsvp@csun.edu.
