The California State University Board of Trustees has approved a proposal to build a permanent home for Cal State Northridge’s Tseng College of Extended Learning.

The CSU board, at its Sept 24 meeting, authorized CSUN officials to proceed with the design of a new campus building to house the Tseng College. The new facility would be located on the west side of the campus at the corner of Darby Avenue and Vincennes Street, adjacent to the university’s transit station and University Hall, CSUN’s administration building. The self-supporting college has been operating in the university’s bookstore complex since 1994, when damage from the Northridge earthquake forced a move from the university’s former administration building.

“The new permanent home of the Tseng College reflects the great demand that exists for the outstanding extended learning opportunities and related programs that CSUN offers to the broader community and to working professionals and their employers in the region,” said CSUN President Dianne F. Harrison. “The proposed facility will give the college the space and flexibility to serve students and the community more effectively.”

University officials do not expect to break ground for construction of the project for at least a year. The projected cost of the project—which includes construction, furniture, equipment and other expenses—is about $37.2 million and will be borne by the college.

The proposed new facility will allow Tseng College to expand CSUN’s presence in graduate, international and midcareer education, as well as in applied research and research relationships with regional, national and international employers. By increasing the college’s profile, the building is expected to promote increased private-sector partnerships. The new space will be versatile and reconfigurable, enabling it to respond to changing modes of research, teaching and learning in the years ahead.

`“This is a wonderful addition for Tseng College’s students and many faculty and staff who work for and with extended learning,” said CSUN Provost Harry Hellenbrand, who is also the university’s vice president for academic affairs.
