Matador Exchange: CSUN’s Craigslist

MatadorExchangeHoping to reduce waste and offer students, faculty and staff a convenient and friendly environment to buy, sell or trade products, California State University, Northridge’s Associated Students has created the Matador Exchange online network.

The website is modeled after popular online classified ad sites like Craigslist and the Freecycle Network. The Matador Exchange can be used to post items ranging from furniture and electronics to sports equipment and textbooks. Users are required to use their csun.edu email accounts to access the site and its services.

“This gives students and others an opportunity to sell items and reduce waste,” said Kevin Mojaradi, marketing and public relations coordinator for Associated Students. “It’s a safe environment for all involved.”

The website was launched fall 2013. Several other universities offer similar classified ad sites. Mojaradi said the project was supported by the Environment Affairs Committee of the Associated Students as a way to find an alternatives for students moving out of campus housing and disposing of “good” furniture and other merchandise.

“During the housing move-out, there are always so many perfectly good items in the trash,” Mojaradi said. “This gives students an alternative to just throwing items away.”

Users post ads and can search for items on the website. If an individual is interested in an item, there is an online form to send an inquiry directly to the ad poster.
