Student-athletes at California State University, Northridge proved they can excel in the classroom and on the field of play as a record 95 Matadors were recognized for outstanding academic achievements, at the annual Varsity N Honor Roll Ceremony on March 26.

The ceremony, presented by the CSUN Department of Athletics, celebrated student-athletes who achieved a GPA of 3.2 or higher for the two most recently completed semesters.

The awards for Female and Male Scholar Athletes of the Year were given to Shannon Hovanesian (water polo, 3.9 GPA) and Nolan Bumstead (baseball, 3.8 GPA).

The men’s cross country team had the highest average team GPA of all men’s sports with a 3.1, and for the third year in a row, the women’s tennis team had the highest GPA on the women’s side with an average GPA of 3.3.

Softball player Madalyne Handy won the annual Dick Enberg Post-Graduate Scholarship for Academic Excellence, which is given to a four-year student-athlete with a 3.2 GPA or higher who studies in a specific field and plans to continue their education in graduate school.
