CSUN Honors Faculty Achievements, Service and Impact on Student Success
On May 20, the last day of Commencement and just hours before the final graduates received their diplomas, CSUN President Dianne F. Harrison, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Stella Theodoulou and Faculty President Mary-Pat Stein hosted another celebration for the people who helped those students get there: the annual Honored Faculty Reception.
Sponsored by the Office of the President, Office of the Provost, the Northridge Chapter of the California Faculty Association and the Faculty Senate, the annual celebration recognizes the hard work and achievements of current faculty, as well as those receiving emeritus status.
“Commencement is a culminating event for the students, which makes today the greatest time to honor our faculty — those who have spent the most time with our students, mentoring them, teaching them, working with them side-by-side in scholarly and creative activities,” Harrison said.
In addition to those newly granted emeritus status, the reception honored faculty who have taught at CSUN for 25, 30, 35 and 40 years, as well as faculty members who have made great strides in research and demonstrated unwavering commitment to their students and the university. The honorees were selected by committees comprised of faculty members.
“It really is an honor to be here for everybody, if you’ve been here on campus for one year, 10 years or 15 years, to acknowledge what a great faculty we have,” Theodoulou said. “And I think that’s shown by the fact that so many people stay and make their careers here.”
In the category of Outstanding Faculty, awards were presented to CSUN professors Bradley McAuliff (Psychology) and Edward Jackiewicz (Geography).
Harrison said of McAuliff: “He has received both internal and external recognition honors for his commitment to students, through his robust teaching and mentoring during his tenure at CSUN. As one former student stated, ‘Brad was responsible for giving me the greatest gift any professor can give to a student — the strength and confidence to believe in myself and to realize my full potential.’”
McAuliff’s scholarship has consisted of more than 50 conference presentations, 17 articles and peer-reviewed journals, 14 book chapters and edited volumes, educational presentations, two books, and a degree from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
Jackiewicz was a first-generation college student before he became a professor. He is the author of the seminal book, “Placing Latin America,” now in its fourth edition; as well as 22 book chapters, 15 peer-reviewed journal articles, and he has presented at numerous national and international conferences. At CSUN, he has taught in the Master of Public Administration degree program, as well as numerous other courses, and he has received more than 15 internal and external grants. Jackiewicz serves as the Faculty Athletics Representative, as well as chair of the Department of Geography.
“One student noted that Dr. Jackiewicz has changed lives for the better,” Harrison said. “And he does this by broadening their worldviews and bringing the world to CSUN.”
