Awards and Honors 

Barbara “Bobbie” Eisenstock (Journalism) was honored with a Service Award from the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) at its conference, held in Washington, D.C. The award is “given to individuals or projects that have significantly contributed to the growth and quality of the field of media literacy.” Eisenstock gave three presentations while at the NAMLE conference as well, two of which were based on her CSUN service-learning projects and one was related to the news literacy course Eisenstock teaches.

Nhut Ho (Mechanical Engineering) was honored with an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Vinh University, where Ho has been a Fulbright Specialist.

David M. McCarty-Caplan (Social Work) was one of 18 people selected from across the nation for the exclusive Jewish Leaders of Color training program through the organization Bend the Arc/Selah. The program lasts six-months, involving monthly conference calls and two four-day training retreats, one in Simi Valley and the other in Virginia.

David Russell (Finance) was honored with the ARIA Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA), in recognition of Russell’s excellence in risk management and insurance teaching. It is the highest teaching recognition in the field.

Denise Sandoval (Chicana/o Studies) will guest-curate “¡Viva Viclas! The Art of the Lowrider Motorcycle,” an exhibition that celebrates and explores the art and culture of the LowRider motorcycle, at CAM Raleigh Contemporary Art Museum in North Carolina.

Publications 

Michael Bryson (English) published a book through Routledge, “The Humanist (Re)Turn: Reclaiming the Self in Literature.”

Nanci Carr (Business Law) published an article in the Boston University Public Interest Law Journal, “Am I My Brother’s Keeper? How Technology Necessitates Reform of the Lack of Duty to Rescue or Duty to Report Laws in the U.S.” Carr also published an article in Wake Forest Law Review Online, “‘#SP’ or ‘Thanks [BRAND]’ Is Not Enough: FTC Guides For Social Media Influencers on Endorsements and Testimonials.”

Amir Gharehgozli (Systems and Operations Management) published an article in Transportation Science entitled “Vertical Expansion: A Solution for Future Container,” which reviews the
transition of container layout design from traditional to automated and future container terminals.

Jinah Kim (Communication Studies) published a book through Duke University Press, “Postcolonial Grief: The Afterlives of the Pacific Wars in the Americas.”

Presentations 

Jessica Baty​ (Communication Studies) partnered with Los Angeles Police Department Cadets to have her Advanced Public Speaking students lead educational workshops to teach more than 400 cadets fundamentals of public speaking.

Amanda Bradstock-Waitz, Grace Castaneda and Angie Gonzalez (Matador Advising Hub) will present “Career Theory 101” at the 2020 National Academic Advising Association Regional Conference in April in Palm Springs.

Tim Tiemann (CSUN Innovation Incubator) gave a presentation at Vinh University on Sept. 21, sharing the best practices in innovation and entrepreneurship that CSUN’s David Nazarian College of Business and Economics has developed and implemented at CSUN in the past few years.

Research and Sponsored Projects 

Elizabeth Adams and Deborah Cours (Undergraduate Studies) received $30,000 from Unite LA in support of the project “Lumina Talent Hubs: Reverse Transfer.”

Mads Peter Andersen (Chemistry and Biochemistry) received $294,322 from the National Science Foundation in support of the project “RUI: Far Ultra-Violet (172 nm) Photolysis of Gaseous Anthropogenic Pollutants.”

Eli Bartle and Katie Mortimer (Social Work) received $505,147 from University of California, Los Angeles in support of the project “University Consortium for Children and Families (UCCF).”

Joseph Bautista (Art), Kyle Dewey (Computer Science), Nhut Ho (Mechanical Engineering), Ellie Kazemi (Psychology), Li Lui (Computer Science) and Suzanne Scheld (Anthropology) received $538,096 from the U.S. Department of Defense in support of the project “Human Swarming Teaming Platform for Research in Human Automation Trust and Reliance.”

Susan Belgrad (Elementary Education) and Nathan Durdella (Educational Leadership and Policy Studies) and S.K. Ramesh (Electrical and Computer Engineering) received $150,000 from the U.S. Department of Education in support of the project “Bridging the Gap: Enhancing AIMS2 for Student Success.”

Igor Beloborodov (Physics and Astronomy) received $140,000 from University of California, Los Angeles in support of a project “NSF Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Translational Applications of Nanoscale Multiferroic Systems TANMS.”

Annette Besnilian (Family and Consumer Sciences) and Merav Efrat (Health Sciences) received $250,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in support of the project “Pathways to Success for Hispanic Students as Registered Dietitians.”

Danielle Bram and Regan Maas (Geography) received $25,000 from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in support of the project “Geological and Geophysical (GandG) Dataset Improvement.” Bram and Maas also received $5,000 from CSU Chico in support of the project “Habitat assessments in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.”

Robert Carpenter (Biology) received $176,065 from the National Science Foundation in support of the project “RAPID: Immediate and Subsequent Effects of Coral Bleaching on Fore Reef Community Metabolism.” Carpenter also received $128,662 from UC Santa Barbara in support of the project “LTER: MCR III: Long-Term Dynamics of a Coral Reef Ecosystem.”

Mary Cecil, Jennifer Cotton, Eileen Evans, Priya Ganguli, Scott Hauswirth, Julian Lozos and Joshua Schwartz (Geological Sciences) received $600,000 from the U.S. Department of Defense in support of the project “Development of a CSUN GeoAnalytical Center for Research, Teaching, and Outreach in Earth Systems Science.”

Zhen Chai (Special Education), Tara Fahmie (Psychology), Michele Haney (Special Education) and Stephanie Hood (Psychology) received $113,737 from the U.S. Department of Education in support of the project “The Bridge Project: Bringing Early Childhood Special Educators and Behavior Interventionists Together Through Interdisciplinary Evidence-Based Preparation to Serve Young Children with High-Intensity Needs.”

Gary Chapman (Physics and Astronomy) received $78,623 from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in support of the project “Comparing Spacecraft TSI and SSI with proxies from space- and ground-based images.”

Gabriela Chavira (Psychology), Crist Khachikian (Civil Engineering and Construction Management), Patchareeya Kwan (Health Sciences) and Carrie Saetermoe (Psychology), received $5,172,718 from the National Institutes of Health in support of the project “BUILD @ CSUN.”

Debi Prasad Choudhary (Physics and Astronomy) received $39,660 from the National Science Foundation in support of the project “Collaborative Research: SHINE: Study of Long-Term Variability of Solar Chromospheric Activity in Multiple Solar Cycles.”

Matthew d’Alessio (Geological Sciences), Brian Foley and Norman Herr (Secondary Education), Virginia Oberholzer Vandergon (Biology) and Li Ye (Chemistry and Biochemistry) received $24,000 from the University of California Regents in support of the project “San Fernando Valley Science Project (State).”

Maria-Rita D’Orsogna (Mathematics) received $269,984 from University of California, Los Angeles in support of the project “Associate Director — Visiting Researcher (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics).”

Rafi Efrat (Accounting and Information Systems) received $643,366 from the U.S. Department of Education in support of the project “Developing California’s Workforce: Creating Pathways for Latino Transfer Students in High Demand Careers.” Efrat also received $351,750 from the State of California in support of the CSU5+ VITA Initiative and $130,000 from the U.S. Department of Treasury, in support of the CSUN VITA Program.

Tara Fahmie (Psychology) received a training grant from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to disseminate function-based assessments and interventions for problem behavior in India for a week in July 2019. While there, Fahmie trained parents of children with special needs and professionals in handling challenging behavior in children. Fahmie also received $10,692 from Pacoima Charter School in support of the project “Taking Steps Together Partnership with Pacoima Charter School.”

Sean Flanagan (Kinesiology) received $1,222 from the Far West Athletic Trainers Association in support of the project “Motor Redundancy and Compensations During Single-Limb Support.”

James Flynn (Electrical and Computer Engineering) received $30,000 from Jet Propulsion Laboratory in support of the project “Development of a Compact Non-Steerable RF/Optical Ground Station for Space Communications.”

Rachel Friedman-Narr (Special Education) received $106,250 from the California Department of Education in support of the project “Parentlinks.”

Shereazad Gandhi (Department of Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management), Xiyi Hang (Electrical and Comp Engr) and Bingbing Li (Department of Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Management) received $93,000 from El Camino Community College in support of the project “Smart Manufacturing (SM) Workforce Development Model Program.”

Evelyn Garcia and Juana Maria Valdivia (Student Outreach and Recruitment) received two grants from the U.S. Department of Education, $301,913 and $287,537, in support of the project “Upward Bound — San Fernando Valley North Central.”

Kim Goldberg-Roth (Educational Psychology and Counseling) received two grants from the City of Los Angeles, $81,000 and $60,000, in support of the project “Domestic Response Abuse Team (DART) — Mission.” Goldberg-Roth also received $173,834 from the County of Los Angeles in support of the project “County Victim Services Program.”

Kim Goldberg-Roth and Jennifer Pemberton (Educational Psychology and Counseling) received $539,628 from the California Department of Public Health in support of the project “Rape Prevention and Education Program — Community Mobilization for the Primary Prevention of Sexual Violence.”

Xiyi HangBingbing LiLi Liu and Mohammad Rajai (Manufacturing System Engineering Management and Computer Science) received $45,674 from  University of California, Irvine in support of the project “Establishing Smart Connected Workers Infrastructure for Enabling Advanced Manufacturing: A Pathway to Implement Smart Manufacturing for Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs).”

Nhut Ho (Department of Mechanical Engineering) received $972,647 from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, in support of the project “Autonomy Research Center for STEM.”

Bradley Jackson (Electrical and Computer Engineering) received $40,000 from the Aerospace Corporation, in support of the project “Reconfigurable Small Satellite Antennas.”

Ellen Jarosz (Collection Access and Management) received $94,599 from University of California in support of the project “LA as Subject Digitization Residency and Training Program.”

Crist Khachikian (Civil Engineering and Construction Management) and Tim Tiemann (College of Business and Economics) received $99,667 from the National Science Foundation in support of the project I-Corps.

Nicholas Kioussis (Physics and Astronomy) received $61,999 from Northwestern University in support of the project “Partnership for Development of High-Performance Magnetic Memory Technology.” Kioussus also received $140,000 from University of California, Los Angeles, in support of the project “NSF Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Translational Applications of Nanoscale Multiferroic Systems TANMS.”

Scott Kleinman (English) received $83,655 from University of California, Santa Barbara in support of the project “WhatEvery1Says.”

Amy Levin (Social Work) received $1,500 from the University of California Regents in support of the project “Mental Health Stipend Program (California Social Work Education Center/CalSWEC).” Levin also received $1,734,645 from University of California, Berkeley in support of the project “CalSWEC Title IV-E Social Work Training Program.”

Gang Lu and Xu Zhang (Physics and Astronomy) received $439,283 from the National Science Foundation in support of the project “DMREF: Data Driven Discovery of Conjugated Polyelectrolytes for Neuromorphic Computing.”

Regan Maas (Geography) received $15,000 from Polymath Geo Inc. in support of the project “Earth Station Lab Project.”

Kathleen Marsaglia (Geological Sciences) received $84,491 from the Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York in support of the project “Salary Support for Participation on IODP Expedition 385, Guaymas Basin.”

Majid Mojirsheibani (Mathematics) received $174,975 from the National Science Foundation in support of the project “RUI: Partially Observed Curves, and Big-Data Virtual Bootstrap.”

Richard Moore and Loren Naido (Management) received $85,526 from the California Office of Legislative Counsel in support of the project “Legislative Counsel Management Training.”

Kerry Nickols (Biology) received $46,229 from the USC Sea Grant Program, in support of the project “Wave attenuation and chemical buffering: Determining ecosystem services of giant kelp to Southern California.”

Ignacio Osorno (Electrical and Computer Engineering) received two grants, $90,000 and $95,000, from Aerojet Rocketdyne in support of the project “Development of Internship Honors Co-Op Program.”

Shiva Parsa (Educational Opportunity Program) received $253,032 from the U.S. Department of Education in support of the project “CSU Northridge Student Support Services Program.”

Kathryn Peckham-Hardin (Special Education) received $245,709 from the U.S. Department of Education in support of the project “Project I-PREP: Inclusive Preparation for Resourceful and Effective Professionals.”

Bethany Rainisch (Health Sciences) received $253,044 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in support of the project “iSTART: A Campus Initiative for Services in Telehealth and Rapid Testing.”

S.K. Ramesh (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Robert Ryan (Mechanical Engineering) received $1,199,517 from the U.S. Department of Education in support of the project “Bridging the Gap: Enhancing AIMS2 for Student Success.”

Deqing Ren (Physics and Astronomy) received $174,910 from the National Science Foundation in support of the project “Development of a High-Speed and Full-Disk Polarimeter for Solar Synoptic Observations.”

Kathleen Rowlands and Jennifer Wolfe (Secondary Education) received $32,185 from the University of California Regents in support of the project “California Subject Matter Project Grant for the Cal State Northridge Writing Project.”

Stevie Ruiz (Chicana/o Studies) received $15,000 from California Humanities in support of a project entitled “Migration, Environment, and the Search for Sanctuary.”

Emily Russell (Child and Adolescent Development) received $90,640 from Jumpstart Inc. in support of the project “Jumpstart Northridge.”

Robert Ryan (Mechanical Engineering) and Reza Sayed (Engineering and Computer Science) received two donations from CSU Sacramento, $30,000 and $35,000, in support of the project “NSF Subaward- CSU Louis Stokes-Alliance for Minority Participation (CSU-LSAMP) Senior Alliance.”

Sheree Schrager (Research and Sponsored Programs) received $46,000 from the National Science Foundation in support of the project “NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program.”

Sue Sears (Special Education) received $27,000 from the Napa County Office of Education in support of the project “California Adolescent Literacy Initiative (CALI).”

Nyssa Silbiger (Biology) received $817,032 from the National Science Foundation, in support of the project “RUI: Collaborative Research: Defining the Biogeochemical Context and Ecological Impacts of Submarine Groundwater Discharge on Coral Reefs.”

Suzanne Spear (Health Sciences) received $145,000 from the National Institutes of Health in support of the project “A Systems Science Approach for Improving Continuity of Service in Substance Use Disorder Rreatment.”

Jacklyn Stallcup (College of Humanites) received $34,210 from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in support of the project “Hispanic Serving Institutions: Pathways to the Professoriate.”

Shari Tarver-Behring (College of Education) received two grants from the Los Angeles Unified School District, $3,747.60 and $8,328, in support of the project “Professional Development Services in Support of Private Schools.”

Claudia Toledo-Corral (Health Sciences) received $39,273 from University of Southern California in support of the project “Maternal and Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social Stressors (MADRES).”

Juana Maria Valdivia (Student Outreach and Recruit) received $317,307 from the U.S. Department of Education in support of the project “Talent Search San Fernando Valley North Central.”

Kristen Walker (Marketing) received $230,960 from the National Science Foundation in support of the project “An Exploratory Study of Technology Adoption in K-12: Educational Benefits vs. Privacy Costs.”

Ivor Weiner (Special Education) received $49,991 from the North Los Angeles County Regional Center in support of the project “CalFresh Outreach.” Weiner also received $147,096 from the North Los Angeles County Regional Center in support of the project “Van Nuys Family Resource Center and Library” and $203,107 from the California Department of Education in support of the project “Family Focus Empowerment Center.”

Erica Wohldmann (Institute for Sustainability) received $105,309 from the Tree People in support of the project “Cooler and Healthier: Reducing Heat-Health Risk Using Urban Forestry and Stakeholder Engagement.”

MariaElena Zavala (Biology) received $245,678 from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences in support of the project “MARC U-STAR at CSUN: Preparing Scientists Holistically.”
