Publications

Pouyan Eslami ​(Systems and Operations Management) published an article in the Journal of Computer Information Systems titled “Understanding Data Analytics Recommendation Execution: The Role of Recommendation Quality,” and another article in Decision Support Systems titled “Understanding Consumer Engagement in Social Media: The Role of Product Lifecycle.”

Leily Farrokhvar ​(Systems and Operations Management) published an article in the Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and Transportation Review titled “Integrated Student to School Assignment and School Bus Routing Problem for Special Needs Students.”

Amir Gharehgozli (Systems and Operations Management) published a book through SAGE Publications Inc. titled “Data Analytics: Demystifying Excel.”

Alexis Krasilovsky ​(Screenwriting and Film Studies) wrote and directed a film titled “Women Behind the Camera,” which was streamed through the National Gallery of Art, Nov. 10-16. In addition, her documentary “Shooting Women” will be streaming on the Criterion Channel as part of its December programming, remaining available for two years there.

Kurt Saunders ​and ​Valerie Flugge​ (Business Law) published an article in the Duke Law & Technology Journal titled “Intellectual Property Protection for Recipes and Food Designs.”
Zhaleh Semnani-Azad (Management) published an article titled “Who Can Lean In? The Intersecting Role of Race and Gender in Negotiations” that has been included in the Women and Public Policy Program’s Gender Action Portal of Harvard Kennedy School.

​Kristen Walker ​(Marketing and Nazarian MBA Program) published an article titled “What Exactly Is Marketing and Public Policy? Insights for JPPM Researchers,” in the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing.

Research and Sponsored Projects

Igor Beloborodov ​and Nicholas Kioussis (Physics and Astronomy) received $115,000 from the University of California, Los Angeles in support of a project entitled “NSF Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Translational Applications of Nanoscale Multiferroic Systems TANMS.”

Annette Besnilian (Family and Consumer Sciences) received $60,000 from the Northeast Valley Health Corporation in support of a project entitled “WIC-Based Dietetic Internship Program.”

Kacie Blackman (Health Sciences) received $50,000 from the National Institutes of Health in support of a project entitled “Thriving While Black: Black Birth Equity Workers Glowing Through COVID-19” as part of a BUILD pilot project.

David Boyns (Community Health and Wellbeing) received $50,000 from the Child Care Resource Center in support of a project entitled “Help Me Grow.”

Danielle Bram (Geography) received $29,750 from California State University, San Bernardino in support of a project entitled “Developing a Standardized Statewide Geospatial Dataset of Water Agencies for California,” and $86,000 from CSU Chico in support of a project entitled “California Broadband Field Testing.”

Danielle Bram and Regan Maas (Geography) received $14,400 from Polymath Geo Inc in support of a project entitled “Earth Station Lab Project,” and $140,000 from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in support of a project entitled “Geological and Geophysical (G&G) Dataset Improvement.” They also received  $77,500 from California State University, San Bernardino in support of a project entitled “DACIP Task Order 3 – Ventura.”

Jodi Brown and Katie Mortimer (Social Work) received $217,938 from The Regents of the University of California in support of a project entitled “University Consortium for Children and Families (UCCF).”

Ana Cadavid (Physics and Astronomy) received $40,951 from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in support of a project entitled “Participation in Characterizing the Physical and Dynamical Properties of Coronal Holes and Adjacent Quiet-Sun Regions Program.”

Zhen Chai, Michele Haney (Special Education) and Tara Fahmie (Psychology) received $249,983 from the United States Department of Education in support of a project entitled “The Bridge Project: Bringing Early Childhood Special Educators & Behavior Interventionists Together Through Interdisciplinary Evidence-Based Preparation to Serve Young Children with High-Intensity Need.”

Karin Crowhurst (Chemistry and Biochemistry) received $108,750 from the National Institutes of Health in support of a project entitled “In Vitro and In-Cell Investigation of the Acid-Stress Chaperone HdeA.”

Merav Efrat (Health Sciences) received $750,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in support of a project entitled “Pipeline for Diverse Nutrition Students to Become Certified Lactation Counselors.”

Rafi Efrat (Accounting and Information Systems) received $16,750 from the Volunteers of America in support of a project entitled “CSUN VITA Clinic @ Volunteers of America of Los Angeles.”

Gilberto Flores (Biology) received $22,385 from the National Institutes of Health in support of a project entitled “Mechanisms and Consequences of Human Milk Oligosaccharide Growth and Bile Stress Across Diverse Strains of the Potential Therapeutic Bacterium, Akkermansia Muciniphila.”

Priya Ganguli and Scott Hauswirth (Geological Sciences) received $15,000 from The Regents of the University of California in support of a project entitled “Assessing Contaminant Distributions and Sources in Castaic Lake, a Mercury-Impacted Reservoir in Los Angeles County, CA.”

Kim Goldberg-Roth (Educational Psychology and Counseling) received $351,646 from the California Office of Emergency Services in support of a project entitled “CalOES RAPE CRISIS PROGRAM NW16,” and $144,205 from Haven Hills in support of a project entitled “Haven Hills Survivors First Homelessness Prevention Program.” Goldberg-Roth also received $257,500 from the California Office of Emergency Services in support of a project entitled “Child Abuse Treatment (AT) Program.”

Kim Goldberg-Roth and Jennifer Pemberton (Educational Psychology and Counseling) received $665,608 from the California Office of Emergency Services in support of a project entitled “CalOES RAPE CRISIS PROGRAM VN16.”

Christine Hayashi (Educational Leadership and Policy Studies) received $801 from the LA Unified School District in support of a project entitled “Professional Development Services in Support of Private Schools.”

Nhut Ho (Autonomy Research Center) received $949,911 from NASA in support of a project entitled “Autonomy Research Center for STEAHM.”

Bingbing Li (Autonomy Research Center for STEAHM) received $67,456 from the Regents of the University of California in support of a project entitled “Climate Change Resiliency Assessment for Cold Storage and Logistics.”

Julian Lozos (Geological Sciences) received $21,061 from the Southern California Earthquake Center in support of a project entitled “Rupture Propagation Around the Big Bend of the San Andreas Fault: A Dynamic Rupture Modeling Case Study of the Great Earthquake of 1857.”

Maosheng Miao, Jussi Eloranta, Joseph Teprovich, Abdelaziz Boulesbaa (Chemistry and Biochemistry) and Kah Chun Lau (Physics and Astronomy) received $455,237 from the National Science Foundation in support of a project entitled “MRI: Acquisition of a GPU/CPU Computing Cluster for Research and Education in Computational Chemistry and Materials.”

Thomas Minehan (Chemistry and Biochemistry) received $70,000 from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund in support of a project entitled “Exploring the Utility of Ynol Carbonates in Tandem Aarbon-carbon Bond-forming Reactions.”

Elena Miranda (Geological Sciences) received $34,687 from the Southern California Earthquake Center in support of a project entitled “Rheological investigation of deep crustal mylonites, San Gabriel Mountains, California.”

Elena Miranda, Joshua Schwartz, and Mary Cecil (Geological Sciences) received $800,200 from the National Science Foundation in support of a project entitled “MRI: Acquisition of a Field Emission Gun Scanning Electron Microscope for Cal State Northridge Scanning Electron Microscopy Lab.”

Jennifer Newman (Health Sciences) received $10,000 from the University of California, Los Angeles in support of a project entitled “Exploring the Role of Environmental Health in the Health Administration College Curriculum.”

Kerry Nickols (Biology) received $29,608 from The Regents of the University of California in support of a project entitled “Sustaining and Expanding the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS).”

Virginia Oberholzer Vandergon (Biology), Brian Foley and  Norman Herr (Secondary Education), Matthew d’Alessio (Geological Sciences) and Li Ye (Chemistry and Biochemistry) received $24,000 from The Regents of the University of California in support of a project entitled “San Fernando Valley Science Project (State).”

Jennifer Pemberton and Kim Goldberg-Roth (Educational Psychology and Counseling) received $683,855 from the California Victim Compensation Board in support of a project entitled “Trauma Recovery Center Grant,” and $204,500 from the California Office of Emergency Services in support of a project entitled “Campus Sexual Assault (CT) Program.”

Bethany Rainisch (Health Sciences) received $253,044 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in support of a project entitled “iSTART: A Campus Initiative for Services in Telehealth and Rapid Testing.”

Stevie Ruiz (Chicana/o Studies) received $39,000 from the University of California, Los Angeles in support of a project entitled “Stewards of the Land: Race, Space, and Environmental Justice.”

Sue Sears (Special Education) received $25,000 from the Napa County Office of Education in support of a project entitled “California Adolescent Literacy Initiative (CALI).”

Zhaleh Semnani-Azad (Management) received $149,999 from the National Science Foundation in support of a project entitled “Investigating Acceptability in the Workforce of Collaborative Robots that Provide and Request Assistance on an As-Needed Basis.”

Joseph Teprovich (Chemistry and Biochemistry) received $248,526 from the National Science Foundation in support of a project entitled “LEAP-MPS: Investigating the Effect of Ion Trapping and Nanoionic Destabilization on Ion-Transport Phenomenon in Composite Materials Containing Large Boron-rich Anion (LBRA) Salts.”

Timothy Tiemann (College of Business and Economics) received $59,450 from the National Science Foundation in support of a project entitled “I-Corps.”

Holli Tonyan Gajadhar (Psychology) received $49,992 from the National Institutes of Health in support of a project entitled “Family, Friend and Neighbor Caregiving, Daily Experiences and Stress Physiology” as part of a BUILD pilot project.

Juana Maria Valdivia and Evelyn Garcia (Student Outreach and Recruitment) received two awards from the United States Department of Education: $312,480 in support of a project entitled “Upward Bound – San Fernando Valley North Central,” and $ 297,601 in support of a project entitled “Upward Bound – San Fernando Valley Northeast.”

Ivor Weiner (Special Education) received $207,187 from the North Los Angeles County Regional Center in support of a project entitled “Family Focus Resource Center,” and $405,113 from the California Department of Education in support of a project entitled “Family Focus Empowerment Center.”

Jennifer Wolfe (Secondary Education) received $32,185 from The Regents of the University of California in support of a project entitled “California Subject Matter Project Grant for the Cal State Northridge Writing Project.”

Hui Xie (Recreation & Tourism Management) received $49,727 from the National Institutes of Health in support of a project entitled “El Camino Physical Activity Intervention” in support of a BUILD Pilot Project.

Maria Elena Zavala, Ray Hong, and Cheryl Hogue (Biology) received $517,182 from the National Institutes of General Medical Sciences in support of a project entitled “Bridges to the Doctorate Research Training Program at CSUN.”

Xu Zhang (Physics and Astronomy) received $149,431 from the National Science Foundation in support of a project entitled ” RUI: Exciton-Phonon Interactions in Solids based on Time-Dependent Density Functional Perturbation Theory.”
