The Ethics of Factory Farming Presented by Professor Aaron S. Gross
Factory farming radically transformed animal agriculture over the last half century with few people realizing the many difficulties it produces for animal welfare and worker treatment, in addition to the environmental pollution it produces. How are we to respond? Aaron Gross will share insights from his work on these issues as both the founder of the nonprofit Farm Forward and as a scholar of Jewish studies. The Pin
This new 83-minute Yiddish language film is an unusual love story provoking reflections on love, forgiveness and coming to terms with the past. The film is in Yiddish with English subtitles and will be followed by a Q&A with CSUN Jewish Studies faculty members. CSUN’s Tseng College is one of the largest self-support colleges in the CSU and one of the most widely respected at the state and national levels. Flu Shots Available by Appointment
This year’s seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine will be available for all CSUN students, faculty and staff by appointment beginning Sept. 24 at the Klotz Student Health Center. The vaccine may provide protection against three strains of influenza viruses. The cost is $15. There will be a faculty and staff walk-in flu shot clinic on Tuesday at the lower garden level of the Oviatt Library 16. The walk-in clinic is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

University Counseling Center Open House for Faculty and Staff
Faculty or staff member are a key contributor to student success and as such wear many hats! The University Counseling Center’s professional staff is available as consultants to collaborate with you in your roles as professor, administrator, advisor, counselors and/or leader of students. Our hours of operation for the month of October are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Bayramian Hall 520. Consultation involves a collegial relationship in which the consultant(s) deal exclusively with your work-related or student issues. Services are free and available to any academic department or administrative unit, as well as any individual staff or faculty members.

Emergency Desk Reference for Staff Members, Faculty and Students
The Desk Reference provides general information on emergency preparedness and staff responsibilities. It is a quick guide for what to do during emergency situations that might occur on a university campus-medical emergencys, fire/explosion, hazardous materials, bomb threats or suspicious objects, earthquakes and shooting situations. You may access the desk reference by clicking the link “Emergency Desk Reference for STAFF” on the information bar near the top of the page. [what page?] You may also reach the page referenced above from the “Emergency Information” link at the bottom of the Cal State Northridge home page. It is very important that you update your contact information in the myNorthridge portal so that the university may contact you in the event of an emergency.
Dependent Eligibility Verification (DEV) Project
The verification phase of the CalPERS Dependent Eligibility Verification (DEV) Project has begun. If you are a health plan subscriber with dependents enrolled under your CSUN employee health benefits, you have or will soon receive a letter from HMS Employer Solutions, an independent company contracted by CalPERS to complete the verification phase. We have been advised that this letter will list your covered dependents on the plan, the rules for eligibility and the documentation you are required to submit directly to HMS. As part of the verification process, you will be required to provide copies of documents demonstrating your relationship. Please note that we have been directed not to provide any documents we may have on file to preserve the independent verification process of this system-wide audit. Therefore, you will be required to independently submit your documentation to the CalPERS designated company. Please consult the FAQ section within the letter from HMS for answers to the most common questions.

The first day of the 2014 Faculty Retreat, “CSUN Shine: Community Engagement” will be held on the CSUN campus and the second day will be reserved for an off-campus trip. Retirement
Associate Vice President Mary Ann Cummins Prager has announced she will retire from Cal State Northridge on Oct. 18. She has served in her position since 2010. Prior to that, she served 22 years in Student Affairs, wearing many administrative hats, sometimes more than one at a time. Throughout her CSUN career, she worked creatively, collaboratively and effectively to advance initiatives that have improved student access and services, generated non-state funds for support of university programs, and raised the profile and reputation of CSUN on an international level.
