New Faculty Welcomed to Campus: It’s Not too Late to Register

This year’s New Faculty Orientation will S.H.I.N.E.: Strategies, Highlights, Individualized, Networking and Emotions.

That’s what the facilitators have on the agenda for the annual event on Tuesday, Aug. 20, and Wednesday, Aug. 21. All newly hired tenure-track faculty are invited to attend the event.

New Faculty OrientationWhitney Scott, director of the new faculty orientation and programs and professor the Department of Child and Adolescent Development, said the event will model interactive and learning-centered teaching strategies; highlight only the most critical new faculty information; reveal the individual strengths and talents of new faculty; and offer a personalized experience facilitating networking and relationships and an atmosphere filled with positive emotions.

“I look forward to an engaging and celebratory event for these new CSUN members,” Scott said. “We’re going to have a great time.”

There will be presentations made by the Office of Human Resources, the Division of Information Technology, the Division of Student Affairs and the Oviatt Library. In addition, members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams will be visiting to assist with special exercise breaks, a CSUN student a cappella vocal group will serenade the new faculty, student orientation leaders will provide tours of the campus and President Dianne F. Harrison will host a special reception for new faculty at her home on Aug. 22.

Paulette Theresa, faculty and staff psychologist in University Counseling Services, attended last year and said she learned a lot.

“It helped alleviate anxiety and to make the transition seamless,” Theresa said. “I think I’m better off because I went.”
