California State University, Northridge to host Family Education Day, a daylong celebration focused on providing educational resources for thousands of youth and families, on Saturday, Oct. 26.

University officials expect the annual event to become one of the largest such education fairs in Southern California. Attendance is free.

Family Education Day is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the areas and buildings around CSUN’s Oviatt Library, located in the heart of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge. This will be the first year CSUN has solely hosted the community event since it first joined Univision to host Feria de Educación four years ago.

“It is important for us to continue on this path of momentum that gave us the opportunity to provide a space in our university for the communities in the San Fernando Valley, Antelope Valley and the L.A. basin area to learn about the opportunities that we have at this institution,” said Juana Maria Valdivia, director of student outreach and recruitment.

The Family Education Day will be filled with Spanish-and English-language workshops and other activities designed to give parents the tools to help their children achieve their educational and career goals.

“There’s a huge responsibility for us as an institution to inform the communities of resources on how they can obtain a college degree from CSUN,” Valdivia said. “At the same time, we want families to walk away with more information on how to better support their sons or daughters with their education,” she said.

Workshops will include how to navigate the California educational system, preparing for college early, scholarships, financial aid, services for undocumented students and many more.

The educational fair will include a “reading garden” and a variety of age-appropriate books and learning materials will be distributed to encourage children and their parents to read together.

Food, entertainment and an arts and crafts booth will also be available during the educational fair.
