Faculty and Staff Awards for September 2017

Each month, California State University, Northridge faculty and staff receive funding from outside organizations to support unique programs and cutting-edge research facilitated on campus. Below are a list of the individuals who received awards in September 2017.

Katherine Stevenson (Department of Mathematics) and Cathy Gaspard (Secondary Education) received $78,631 from the LA Unified School District in support of a project entitled ” TCMS Training 2017-2018.” 

Kerry Nickols (Department of Biology) received $572,711 from the National Science Foundation in support of a project entitled “Collaborative Research RUI: Building a mechanistic understanding of water column chemistry alteration by kelp forests: emerging contributions of foundation species.”

Ray Hong (Department of Biology) received $108,750 from the National Institutes of Health in support of a project entitled “The mode-of-action for pheromone-induced paralysis in Pristionchus pacificus.”

Shari Tarver-Behring (Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling) received $416,667 from the LA County Department of Children and Family Services  in support of a project entitled “Family Preservation – San Fernando Valley.”

Jorge Balbas (Department of Mathematics) received $239,777 from The Regents of the University of California as supplemental support of a project entitled “Associate Director- Visiting Researcher (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics).”

SK Ramesh (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) received $1,195,129 from the US Department of Education in support of a project entitled “Bridging the Gap: Enhancing AIMS2 for Student Success.”

M. Robinson Cecil (Department of Geological Sciences) and Joshua Schwartz (Department of Geological Sciences) received $270,208 from the National Science Foundation in support of a project entitled “Acquisition of New Excimer Laser Ablation System for a High Resolution ICPMS Facility.”

Reza Sayed (College of Engineering and Computer Science) and Robert Ryan (Department of Mechanical Engineering) received $65,000 from Sacramento State in support of a project entitled “CSU Louis Stokes-Alliance for Minority Participation (CSU-LSAMP) Senior Alliance (2013-2018).”

Sembiam Rengarajan (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) received $25,000 from the US Navy in support of a project entitled “Accurate and rapid determination of beam pointing direction and polarization of an antenna using a smart wall.”

Tara Fahmie (Department of Psychology) received $6,500 from Autism Behavior Intervention in support of a project entitled “Developing and evaluating a group-based social skills program for individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).”

Deborah Chen (Department of Special Education) received $7,160 from UC Davis in support of a project entitled “Adapting an Evidence-Based Practice for Children At-Risk for Autism for Diverse Early Intervention Systems.”

Susan Belgrad  (Department of Elementary Education) and Norman Herr (Department of Secondary Education) received $40,000 from the Texas State University in support of a project entitled “The NASA-TSU STEM Educator Professional Development Collaborative.”

Virginia Oberholzer Vandergon (Department of Biology), Norman Herr (Department of Secondary Education), Brian Foley (Department of Secondary Education), and Matthew d’Alessio (Department of Geological Sciences) received $24,000 from the UC Regents in continuing support of a project entitled “San Fernando Valley Science Project CSMP.”

Kathleen Rowlands (Department of Secondary Education) received $23,930 from the UC Regents in support of a project entitled “California Subject Matter Project Grant for the Cal State Northridge Writing Project .”

Annette Besnilian (Department of Family & Consumer Sciences) and Merav Efrat (Department of Health Sciences) received $250,000 from the US Department of Agriculture – NIFA in support of a project entitled “Pathways to Success for Hispanic Students as Registered Dietitians (“Pathways”).”

Danielle Bram (Department of Center for Geographical Studies) received $25,000 from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in additional support of a project entitled “Geological and Geophysical (G&G) Dataset Improvement.”
