Nov. 24

29th Annual Pow Wow
American Indian Studies hosts its annual Pow Wow from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on campus, at Plummer Street, east of Reseda Boulevard. Activities will include American Indian dance and music, children’s craft activities, arts and crafts vendors, and native frybread. Admission is free.

Tseng College Master’s Program
Beginning Jan. 8, 2013, Tseng College will offer a Master of Public Administration program in both the Ventura and Norwalk areas to those working in the public, nonprofit or government sectors. The MPA program provides graduate courses in management, human resources, communications, public policy and analysis and labor relations.

Winter Term Registration
Winter Term registration is underway for academic-credit classes at CSUN offered in a compressed format between the fall and spring semesters. The Tseng College administers winter term with classes meeting online or on-campus Dec. 20, 2012 through Jan. 18, 2013. Classes are open to CSUN students and to the community at-large. Class schedules and registration and fee information are posted on the Tseng College winter term website.

Volunteer with the Institute for Sustainability on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. to help maintain the campus garden located behind Northridge Academy High School on the northeast side of campus.

Social Media Privacy for Students

Effective Jan. 1, 2013, Senate Bill 1349 regarding social media privacy in postsecondary education will be enforced. It prohibits postsecondary education institutions and their employees and representatives from requiring or requesting a student, prospective student or student group to disclose, access or divulge personal social media. Penalization of students who do not comply with a request or demand to access personal social media violates this law.

Policy on Procedures for Evaluating Teaching Effectiveness
Section 612.5.2.c.(2)(b)(ii) of the Administrative Manual was reaffirmed to comply with changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement of Fall 2012 by the Faculty Senate and approved by President Dianne F. Deadlines

Dec. 21

December Payroll Distribution
A form must be filled out and delivered to University Cash Services by Dec. 21.  The form is available at University Cash Services or online at http://www-admn.csun.edu/ohrs/payroll/forms/pay-warrant-pickup-dec-2012.pdf.  A CSUN photo ID is required in order to release your pay warrant. December pay warrants will be distributed in the lobby of Bayramian Hall on Monday, Dec. 31, from noon to 2 p.m.  Employees unable to pick up checks may authorize someone to do so, in writing.  Include the name of the authorized person, the employee’s department, the last four digits of the employee’s Social Security number and the employee’s signature.  Uncollected checks will be available for department pick-up from noon to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Condolences

Carl J. Olsen
Carl J. Olsen, Ph.D., emeritus faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, passed away on Oct. 23. Professor Olsen, who specialized in organic chemistry, joined the faculty at California State University, Northridge, then San Fernando Valley State College, as a founding member of the department in 1961 and remained an active faculty member until 1995. Prior to coming to CSUN, he served in the U.S. Army at Walter Reed Medical Center and earned his doctorate from the University of Southern California. As remembered by fellow emeritus faculty member Sandor Reichman, Olsen was an outstanding instructor and colleague and a substantial member of the department. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Willa Olsen and their sons, John-Carl and Eric The funeral service will be private. The family asks that donations be made to the CSUN Foundation to support the Professor Carl Olsen Graduate Scholarship in Chemistry, CSUN Foundation, 18111 Nordhoff St. Northridge, Calif. 91330.
