By popular demand, the California State University, Northridge Student Recreation Center’s (SRC) third-floor training zone is finishing up a summer makeover, finishing up the installation of TRX Suspension Trainer straps and new equipment. The training zone also will have expanded space on one side of the indoor track.

The upgraded space will feature brand-new floors, added black indoor “turf” and repainted walls, according to Sandra Salute, assistant director of fitness and wellness at the SRC.

The TRX Trainer is a strap that’s attached to a bar, where SRC members can do suspension exercises. Previously, the center offered this equipment only in special classes. The training zone also includes monkey bars, a step platform, ninja grips, new cardio equipment such as “total body bikes” — also known as “turbo trainers,” with bars that move along with users’ arms — and indoor rowing machines. Popular third-floor equipment such as medicine balls, stability balls, weighted bars, BOSU balls and kettle bells remained in place for use by students, faculty, staff and alumni.

With the renovated training zone, the SRC will offer new fitness classes, including TRX training and a “hammock yoga” class. In the latter, instructors hang hammocks from the apparatus for use during yoga postures. The renovations are expected to be completed by the second week of September.

“We want to give people more space to do different floor exercises and functional exercises,” Salute said. “We’re noticing a trend where more students are doing more exercises on the floor, versus on pieces of equipment, so we’re trying to open that up a bit.”

SRC staff take user input seriously, Salute said. “We look at all the feedback left at the front desk and read all the emails,” she said. “We take it all into consideration.”

The SRC also received new facility updates. Kaila Lavin, assistant director of facility operations, said the locker rooms have been overhauled, including resurfacing the floors. At the SRC outdoor field, a kiosk with a hand scanner has been installed to make it easier for students to enter the turf field.
