Multi-platinum, award-winning country singer/songwriter Jo Dee Messina will debut her latest album, ME, at the Valley Performing Arts Center Great Hall on Sunday, July 13. She gives credit to her fans for its title and creative inspiration. Debuting in 1996 with the hit single “Heads Carolina, Tales California,” the successful vocalist has charted nine No. 1 singles, 16 Top 40 singles and sold more than five million records worldwide.
Where did your love for country music stem from?

I heard it as a child and immediately fell in love with it. The songs told my story. The artists sang the words of my life.

Who are your musical influences?

So many…Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, along with Bonnie Raitt, Garth Brooks and James Taylor. It’s kind of a hodgepodge of artists.

Your song “A Woman’s Rant” is your top single at the moment. What was the inspiration behind that song? Why do you think people relate so well to the lyrics?

Ha! That song started as a journal entry of mine one morning. I think people relate because they too experience the craziness of daily life trying to balance so many things.

How did you come to decide to start your own label, Dreambound Records?

It was a way for me to release music to my fans. It’s a form of distribution.

Your new album, ME, is a tribute to your fans as much as it is to your movement forward in the music industry. Why did you ask your fans to choose the songs?
There are too many reasons to list!  One reason is the album varies in ‘style’ because people have different tastes in music they like.

What do you enjoy most about performing?

I love the people – their enthusiasm and their loyalty! They make every show so much fun!

What attracted you to the Valley Performing Arts Center as a venue, and what are you most looking forward to at your upcoming performance?
I look forward to getting back to the area. The venue is really nice, and I hope folks can make it out to the show!
