Abortion Politics: A Case Study in Ethics and Economics in Modern Israel
CSUN’s Jewish studies program presents a discussion led by professor Michal Raucher on the reproductive experiences f Haredi (ultra-Orthodox Jewish) women in Israel. The discussion is from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in the University Student Union, Thousand Oaks Room. It is organized by the Department of Religious Studies and funded by CSUN’s Distinguished Visiting Lecture Program.

Black History Month: Hip-Hop Conference
The Department of Pan African Studies and the Hip-Hop Think Tank present a two-day conference titled, “Bridging the Gaps: Hip-Hop in the Age of Mass Incarceration and Deportation.” Activist and rapper Boots Riley of the group, The Coup; former Black Panther Party leader Elaine Brown; and Olmeca, an MC and activist who has garnered attention in the Latin Alternative scene are among the participants. The conference will take place at CSUN’s University Student Union on Feb. 20 and 21. It will highlight the issues around data that finds minorities are incarcerated at disproportionately higher rates than whites. overing Greatness: The Life and Death of Nelson Mandela

The CSUN chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists-Student Association of Black Communicators will present a panel featuring NABJ President Bob Butler, a longtime broadcast journalist; Ann Simmons, a former Los Angeles Times reporter and video journalist; and Bill Whitaker, former Los Angeles Times reporter and chief of the African bureau who will discuss Mandela’s impact on society from 4 to 6 p.m. in Oviatt 125.

Summer Session Registration Opens
CSUN students may make an appointment to register for summer session the week of March 18.  The registration appointment will allows students to register March 25 through April 1 for summer session classes before open registration starts for the community on April 2. CSUN’s Tseng College administers summer session, which consists of three separate components of academic credit classes that run May 27 to August 19.

Dealing with Workplace Violence and Fear or Threats of Violence Part I
The Department of Police Services will present a workshop designed to familiarize staff with the range of university resources available and how to activate those resources when responding to a variety of behaviors that may cause concern within the employee’s department. The class is scheduled to take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the department’s 2nd floor training room.

Condolences

The Department of Pan African Studies and the campus community extend condolences to the family of James “Jim” Bracy, a longtime member of the department’s faculty. He passed away on Feb. 3. During his tenure, Bracy served as an interim chair of the department and associate dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.  A celebration of Bracy’s life is planned for March.
