Lecture: Flow and the Quality of Life
Positive Psycology Guru, Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi will give a lecture on flow and his years of research and writing on positive psychology in Kurland Hall from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. He is the author of 16 books and his seminal work, Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, a national best seller, laid the groundwork for the field of positive psychology. Advanced registration is required. Tickets will be checked at the door. Attendance is limited to 200 people.

Feb. 10
Jewish Perspectives on Charity
Leah Kalmanson, assistant professor of philosophy and religion at Drake University, will discuss the unique perspective of one of the 20th-century’s most influential philosophers, Emmanuel Levinas. His commentary on homelessness derives from and challenges Jewish perspectives on charitable giving. The CSUN Jewish Studies Program will be holding the lecture at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Beth Shalom located at 15739 Ventura Blvd., Encino CA. The event is free and open to the public.

Bianchi Planetarium
Come and learn about stars, constellations and planets visible in the sky during Winter at the Winter Sky Show, which takes place at 7:30 p.m. It is followed by To Boldly go: A Hollywood History of Space Travel show at 8:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $6 for one show and $10 for two shows; students are $4 for one show and $7 for two shows.

19th Annual Student Research and Creative Works Symposium
Undergraduate and graduate students will showcase their diverse research and creative work at the 19th Annual CSUN Student Research and Creative Works Symposium on Feb. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Northridge Center. This year, 166 participants will present oral and poster presentations on various topics. Students from across all fields of study will be competing for $200 and $100 cash prizes, and the chance to compete in the CSU State Wide Research Competition.

Feb. 14 – Mar. 28
Tin Can Transmissions – 10 Years in the Making
Opening February 14, the exhibition entitled Telegraph Art Collective “Tin Can Transmissions-Ten Years in the Making”, marks the ten-year anniversary of this divergent collective of artists. Comprised of seven members with diverse disciplinary backgrounds, Telegraph is an artist collective that originated in Detroit, Michigan.This exhibition will involve a variety of objects, installations and interventions created entirely on site. Utilizing the CSUN facilities and working closely with student artists, members of Telegraph will respond directly to the site and it’s conditions. The artists will be in residence in the CSUN Art Galleries ten days prior to the opening of the exhibition and will be hosting workshops and lectures as the exhibition unfolds. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14 in the Main Art Galleries from 4 to 7 p.m.

Going Solar? Everything You Need to Know
Helen Cox, director of the Institute for Sustainability, along with Max Aram and Chris Blevins, founders of Pick My Solar, will discuss how solar energy works, key factors to consider when using it and if switching to solar energy makes sense for you. CSUN students, staff, faculty and the community are welcome to attend the free workshops at noon on Monday, Feb. 16 or at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Mar. 19 — all on the garden level of the Oviatt Library 16.

Leadership Forum on Men’s Issues
Throughout their lives, men are encouraged to play by the “rules of masculinity.” These rules about what is acceptable or expected of men often involve making choices that can compromise a healthy work/life balance. Join the panel for a discussion on topics that impact men’s ability to achieve a successful balance of work and life. This month’s discussion catalyst topic is “Relationship with Money.” The discussion will be held on the garden level of the Oviatt Library 16 from noon to 1:30 p.m.

2015 Faculty Awards
Nominations are being accepted for the 2015 faculty awards honoring outstanding faculty achievement. Nominations must be received in the Faculty Senate Office by Friday, Feb. 20. Supporting materials must be received by Friday, March 20. Faculty awards include the Outstanding Faculty Award; the Distinguished Teaching, Counseling or Librarianship Award; the Scholarly Publication(s) Award; Creative Accomplishment(s) Award; Extraordinary Service Award; and the Visionary Service Learning Award. The criteria and nomination form are on the Faculty Senate website.

Spring 2015 Faculty Senate Elections
Nominations for Faculty Senate positions are being accepted at the Feb. 12 Faculty Senate meeting. Another option to run for an open position is to submit to the Faculty Senate Office a petition with 15 faculty signatures by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25. Open for election are the posts for vice president (one-year term), secretary (one-year term), CSU statewide academic senator (three-year term), senators-at-large (two-year term, six positions).

The CSU Catastrophic Leave Donation Program
Any employee who accrues vacation or sick leave credits may voluntarily donate either of those credits to another employee.The CSU Catastrophic Leave Donation Program allows employees to voluntarily donate sick and/or vacation leave credits to employees that are totally incapacitated due to a catastrophic illness or injury, and have exhausted all leave credits. Family illnesses that are deemed catastrophic, requiring an employee to be absent to care for an immediate family member, are also eligible for the CSU Catastrophic Leave Donation Program.
