For Your Information shares announcements of events, public meetings, notices, classes and deadlines relevant to CSUN faculty and staff. The submission deadline is noon on Monday, one week before the next post.

Feb. 14 – Mar. 28
Tin Can Transmissions – 10 Years in the Making
Opening Feb. 14, the exhibition entitled Telegraph Art Collective Tin Can Transmissions-Ten Years in the Making, marks the 10-year anniversary of this divergent collective of artists. Comprised of seven members with diverse disciplinary backgrounds, Telegraph is an artist collective that originated in Detroit.This exhibition will involve a variety of objects, installations and interventions created entirely on site. Utilizing the CSUN facilities and working closely with student artists, members of Telegraph will respond directly to the site and its conditions. The artists will be in residence in the CSUN Art Galleries 10 days prior to the opening of the exhibition and will be hosting workshops and lectures as the exhibition unfolds. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14 in the Main Art Galleries from 4 to 7 p.m.

Storm at Valley State Discussion
The Black Student Union will be discussing the Storm at Valley State at 6 p.m. in Jerome Richfield. This historical event help rally support for departments that teach courses having to do with minority cultures and get ethnic studies instituted at CSUN. This event is a part of Black Student Union Week.

BSU Open Mic Night
The Black Student Union will be showcasing black talent in the USU Games Room. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the event starts at 7 p.m. Don’t S(L)E(A)P, EBT, and Tune Squad will be performing in a rap cypher. This event is a part of Black Student Union Week.

Mar. 12
Physics and Astronomy Nuclear Physics Laboratory
The Department of Physics and Astronomy’s Nuclear Physics Laboratory will be open to interested staff, faculty and guests at 3 to 4 p.m. each Thursday in March. Room 1-100 in Live Oak Hall will have several operating alpha, beta and gamma spectrometers running and demonstrated by senior majors on March 5, 12, 19 and the 26. If you have an item which you suspect is radioactive bring it in for measurements. This free service is partially sponsored by Community Engagement under Professor Joyce H. Burstein.

The Sephardic Jewish Experience
Rabbi Daniel Bouskila, director of the Sephardic Education Center, will share some of the rich cultural history of the Jews of Spain. This history includes stories of crypto-Jews who secretly preserved Jewish practices through the centuries. Everyone is invited to hear Rabbi Bouskila speak at Sierra Hall 305 from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.

Bianchi Planetarium
Come and learn about stars, constellations and planets visible in the sky during Winter at the Winter Sky Show, which takes place at 7:30 p.m. It is followed by The Voyager Encounters show at 8:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $6 for one show and $10 for two shows; students are $4 for one show and $7 for two shows.

The 2015 Envisioning California Lecture
The Center for Southern California Studies in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences presents: The 2015 Envisioning California Lecture: “Los Angeles as a Model of Urban Resilience.”  The discussion about Los Angeles’s ability to respond to adverse events will be held in the USU Grand Salon from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The panel discussion led by Patt Morrison and will feature Fran Pavley, United States Senator, Dr. Alex Hall, Professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Matt Petersen, Chief Sustainability Officer.

Selma to Saigon, The Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War
Daniel S. Lucks will discuss his recently published book Selma to Saigon in Sierra Hall, Whitsett Rm. 451 at 4 p.m. His new book explores the impact of the Vietnam War on the civil rights movement. He will examine the war’s impact on the lives of leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Stokely Carmichael, as well as other activists like Muhammad Ali who faced the threat of military draft.

Bi-Annual Men of Color Enquiry and Student Research Poster Session
William Gregory Sawyer, vice president for Student Affairs at California State University, Channel Islands will be the featured speaker on “Intersectionality” in the USU, Northridge Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event will also feature  students from “AFRS 325: The Black Man in Contemporary Times” presenting research posters on their work concerning black men.

Department of Police Services Community Workshops
March 25

Emergency Personal Preparedness, noon – 1:30 p.m
The Department of Police Services will present a workshop to assist faculty, staff, students and the community on how to prepare for emergencies. Kit Espinosa, emergency preparedness coordinator, will tach the participants how to develop a family emergency plan and prepare emergency supplies. The class is scheduled to take place in the department’s 2nd floor training room. It’s free.

2015 Outstanding Senior Award
The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs is accepting nominations for the Outstanding Senior Award. Four students will receive an award of $1,000 each in recognition for academic excellence, service to community and campus, and exceptional achievement or personal life circumstances that have been overcome. Winners will be presented at the Honors Convocation on Friday, May 15.

The CSU Catastrophic Leave Donation Program
Any employee who accrues vacation or sick leave credits may voluntarily donate either of those credits to another employee.The CSU Catastrophic Leave Donation Program  allows employees to voluntarily donate sick and/or vacation leave credits to employees that are totally incapacitated due to a catastrophic illness or injury, and have exhausted all leave credits.  Family illnesses that are deemed catastrophic, requiring an employee to be absent to care for an immediate family member, are also eligible for the CSU Catastrophic Leave Donation Program.
