A team of assessors from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) will be at California State University, Northridge next month to examine all aspects of the university’s Department of Police Services’ policies and procedures, management, operations and support services.

The visit, which will take place the week of April 6, is part of a voluntary process to gain reaccreditation — a highly prized recognition of the professional excellence in law enforcement and public safety.

“It is amazing how fast the years have flown by since we were first accredited in 2008,” said CSUN Police Chief Anne Glavin. “This will be our third assessment. We’ve established a reputation for being one of the best-accredited departments in the country — a reputation that still stands today. Our goal is to maintain that reputation.”

The assessment team is composed of experienced law enforcement professionals from outside the state of California who will review written materials, conduct interviews and inspect operation procedures and facilities where compliance with IACLEA standards can be witnessed The assessors include team leader Lt. Robert A Wagner, who is retired from the University of Florida Police Department, and Jessica A. Luedtke from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Once the assessors complete their review of the department, they will file a report with IACLEA. Officials there will then decide if CSUN’s police department should be granted accredited status.

As part of the review process, university personnel, students and members of the public are invited to offer their comments about CSUN’s Department of Police Services by calling the assessment team at (818) 677-7788 between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon on April 7. Telephone comments must address the department’s ability to comply with IACLEA standards.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments may send them to IACLEA Accreditation, 342 N. Main St., West Hartford, Conn. 06117-2507.

Capt. Scott Vanscoy, who oversees the accreditations process for CSUN, noted that CSUN’s Department of Police Services must comply with 210 standards in order to be accredited.

Accreditation is valid for four years, during which time the department must submit annual reports proving continued compliance.

Copies of the accreditation standards are available for review at the Department of Police Services at 9222 Darby Ave. in Northridge.
