CSUN Student Recreation Center Recognized for Leading the Way in Student Wellness
The Student Recreation Center at California State University Northridge, is one of the main reasons CSUN has been named on of the “30 Universities that are Leading The Way with Wellness Centers for Students,” as selected by the Top Counseling Schools (TCS) website.
CSUN is included among the top universities across the U.S. that have been recognized for their forward-thinking approach to keeping students happy and healthy in addition to earning good grades, According to the TCS website. Those selected were evaluated on their counseling offerings, fitness amenities and outstanding eco-friendly building features.
“We are extremely honored to be recognized for our efforts in enhancing our student, faculty and staff experience through our wonderful Student Recreation Center,” said Debra Hammond, the University Student Union executive director. “We are also very excited because there’s even more to come as we move closer to launching our new Wellness Center, scheduled to open in Fall 2015.”
The new Wellness Center is intended to be a welcoming destination where each student can find serenity and revitalization amid the rush and activity of campus life. It also will provide a range of effective health and wellness programs and services that promote academic success.
The Student Recreation Center at CSUN currently includes such amenities as a 40-foot climbing wall, volleyball, basketball and badminton courts, a pair of outdoor pools, cardio and weightlifting equipment and trained student nutritionists on hand to offer their peers healthy eating tips. Since opening in 2012, the SRC has served 3,000 to 5,000 members daily during the fall and spring semesters.
Previously, the Student Recreation Center was honored with an architectural award from the Los Angeles Business Council (LABC) for its notable design in 2014, a Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) Excellence Award for Architecture in 2014, and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Status Certification in 2013.
