Mark your calendars and call the ticket office, Los Angeles and SoCal:
On the evening of Thursday, Sept. 22, The Soraya will welcome back patrons, fans, students and the wider community for the 2022-23 season! The packed and thrilling season will feature highlights including an event to honor living legend and American labor leader Dolores Huerta with an evening of music and dance; a specially commissioned performance and tribute to California’s threatened redwoods, Giant Sequoias and Joshua Trees, “Treelogy”; the “Jazz at Naz” festival; and global superstar and certified “Disney Princess” Lea Salonga.
The season at the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts, a glittering jewel of the CSUN campus, kicks off on the 22nd with an evening of jazz: “Redman Mehldau McBride Blade: A Moodswing Reunion,” featuring music from the groundbreaking group’s first album, originally released in 1994. The quartet features Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride and Brian Blade.
The “Musical Tribute to Dolores Huerta,” icon of the United Farm Workers and civil rights movements and a longtime friend of CSUN, is set for Nov. 13. The Soraya is producing this tribute to honor Huerta and her lifelong work. The evening’s performances will be a mix of R&B, folk and Spanish music and will include artists such as Cristela Alonzo, Gaby Moreno, La Marisoul, John Doe, El David Aguilar and Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar. Dance performances and archival radio interviews with Huerta from the 1960s and ’70s also will be featured.
“Treelogy: A Musical Portrait of California’s Redwood, Sequoia and Joshua Trees” on Feb. 23, 2023 is a call to action to save these majestic trees from wildfire threats and other effects of global warming. Three composers have created original pieces for this concert, where their new works will be performed by artists such as Billy Childs, Steven Mackey, Gabriella Smith and Delirium Musicum.
“Jazz at Naz” returns on Feb. 2, 2023 for its second year at The Soraya. The jazz festival will include five concerts over two days of performances. Jazz luminaries such as Christian McBride, Loudon Wainwright III, Samara Joy, Melissa Aldana and Joel Ross will grace the Jazz at Naz stages to showcase their music during the festival. Festival passes also will be available for those interested in attending all five concerts.
Other events for this upcoming season include “Disney in Concert: Aladdin,” to celebrate the film’s 30th anniversary, as well as holiday favorites such as “Alton Brown Live,” “All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914,” and a perennial favorite at The Soraya, “Nochebuena.”
