High School Students to Display Art at CSUN

Students and faculty from 36 high schools across the San Fernando Valley will showcase their work at the 19th annual High School Art Invitational at the California State University, Northridge Art Galleries, from noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 11–30.

The free exhibition, which will allow each high school to display six pieces of art, will feature more than 200 student pieces in the main gallery. The student art will include paintings, sculpture, ceramics, graphic design, illustration and photography.

“It is both fun and important for student-artists to see their artwork exhibited in a professional gallery setting,” said Jim Sweeters, director of the galleries. “It also gives them a chance to see their work displayed alongside that of their peers here in the San Fernando Valley.”

High school teachers are invited to display their work in the West Gallery. A closing reception for the artists will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 29.

“[The invitational] fulfills part of the gallery’s mission statement of engaging the community by inviting them onto campus,” Sweeters said. “[The invitational] also acts as a recruiting tool for the CSUN Art Department.”

The following high schools will be participating: AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School, William Tell Aggeler, Arleta, ArTES, Birmingham Community Charter, Bishop Alemany, Bridges Academy, Burbank, Chaminade College Prep, Chatsworth Charter, Cesar Chavez Learning Academy, Concordia, deToledo, Amelia Earhart, El Camino Real Charter, Faith Baptist, John H. Francis Polytechnic, Fulton College Prep, Granada Hills Charter, Grover Cleveland, Heritage Christian, Highland Hall Waldorf, Louisville, Milken Community, James Monroe, North Hollywood, Northpoint, Northridge Academy, Notre Dame, Reseda, Sierra Canyon, Social Justice Humanitas Academy, Sylmar, William Taft Charter, The Buckley School, Ulysses S. Grant, Valley Academy of Arts and Sciences and Viewpoint School.
