Grand Opening of the Learning Commons
The Oviatt Library invites you to come join the fun at the grand opening of the Learning Commons from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the library. Expect to see new, configurable, versatile furniture that allows students and faculty to create spaces in which their style of learning will be accommodated. Plenty of power outlets have been installed for students and faculty who bring their own devices. Sections of the main floor are being opened up to allow in more natural light and a new permanent installation of a Freudian Sip is in the lobby. Bianchi Planetarium
Come and learn about stars and constellations and planets visible in the sky during autumn at “Autumn Sky Show,” which takes place at 7:30 p.m. It is followed by “Light Years from Andromeda: A journey between two galaxies spans human history – and reveals the secrets of the cosmos.” General admission tickets are $6 for one show, $10 for two shows; students are $4 for one show and $7 for two shows.

International Education Week is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The Building and Floor Marshal Program is designed to provide recruiting, training and coordination of volunteers in every major building on campus. Building Social Emotional Capacity in the Lives of Young African American Children, 11 a.m.–12 p.m.

The topic will address issues of social and emotional development in young African American children as it relates to mental health in the 21st century. Key components of the lecture will include the significance of early parent-child relationships, the impact of trauma, and the effects of racial socialization. The lecture is located in the Whitsett Room in Sierra Hall 451.

Sept. 30

iPad Training, 3–4 p.m.

Located in Oviatt 30, these informal workshops focuses on teaching with iPads led by CSUN faculty or Apple experts. Each session will cover a different tip or technique. Bring your questions and interact with your colleagues in a relaxed, informal setting. The workshop is aimed at faculty but open to all.

Creating Digital Content, 9:30–11:30 a.m.

Located in Oviatt room 30, this workshop covers tools used to create eTextbooks and other forms of digital content, focuses on iBooks Author and programs in the iLife Suit and is taught by representatives from Apple. This is a hands-on session, so be sure to bring your Mac and iPad. The workshop is designed for myCSUNtablet faculty, but open to all faculty and staff. In this session you will receive advice on how to prepare and respond in the event of an earthquake. The safety and well-being of your loved ones is important, so take the time now to learn how to develop a family emergency plan, prepare emergency supplies and other valuable information to help you during and after an earthquake.

Flu Shots Available by Appointment
This year’s seasonal influenza (flu) vaccine will be available for all CSUN students, faculty and staff by appointment beginning Sept. 24 at the Klotz Student Health Center. The vaccine may provide protection against three strains of influenza viruses. The cost is $15. There will be a faculty and staff walk-in flu shot clinic on Tuesday at the lower garden level of the Oviatt Library 16. The walk-in clinic is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

University Counseling Center Open House for Faculty and Staff
Faculty or staff member are a key contributor to student success and as such wear many hats! The University Counseling Center’s professional staff is available as consultants to collaborate with you in your roles as professor, administrator, advisor, counselors and/or leader of students. Our hours of operation for the month of October are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Bayramian Hall 520. Consultation involves a collegial relationship in which the consultant(s) deal exclusively with your work-related or student issues. Services are free and available to any academic department or administrative unit, as well as any staff, and individual faculty members.

Emergency Desk Reference for Staff Members, Faculty and Students
The Desk Reference provides general information on emergency preparedness and staff responsibilities. It is a quick guide for what to do during emergency situations that might occur on a university campus-medical emergency situations, fire/explosion, hazardous materials, bomb threats or suspicious objects, earthquakes and shooting situations.  You may access the desk reference by clicking the link “Emergency Desk Reference for STAFF” on the information bar near the top of the page. You may also reach the page referenced above from the “Emergency Information” link at the bottom of the Cal State Northridge home page.  It is very important that you update your contact information in the myNorthridge portal so that the University may contact you in the event of an emergency.

Dependent Eligibility Verification (DEV) Project
The verification phase of the CalPERS Dependent Eligibility Verification (DEV) Project has begun. If you are a health plan subscriber with dependents enrolled under your CSUN employee health benefits, you have or will soon receive a letter from HMS Employer Solutions, an independent company contracted by CalPERS to complete the verification phase. We have been advised that this letter will list your covered dependents on the plan, the rules for eligibility, and the documentation you are required to submit directly to HMS. As part of the verification process, you will be required to provide copies of documents demonstrating your relationship. Please note that we have been directed not to provide any documents we may have on file to preserve the independent verification process of this system-wide audit, therefore you will be required to independently submit your documentation to the CalPERS designated company. Please consult the FAQ section within the letter from HMS for answers to the most common questions.

Policy on Examinations and Religious Observations
Campus policy states that “in administering any test or examination, we will permit any student who is eligible to undergo the test of examination to do so, without penalty, at a time when the activity would not violate the student’s religious creed.” If a faculty member needs assistance in evaluating the request of a student for the re-scheduling of an examination for purposes of religious observation.

Doris Helfer — Appointment
Doris Helfer has been appointed as acting chair of the Department of Collection Access and Management Services for a one-year term, effective Sep. 9, 2013. Her term as department chair will expire on or before the conclusion of the Summer 2014 term.

Section 612.5.2.c.(2)(a)(iii) and Section 706.3.1.c. of the Administrative Manual was reaffirmed on May 20, 2013 by the Faculty Senate and approved by President Dianne F. Harrison.
