CSUN Kicks Off New Student Orientation
If you’ve noticed an increase of red-shirted individuals on campus with wide-eyed students following suit, it’s because California State University, Northridge has officially launched its annual season of new student orientations.
Starting this week through Aug. 23, the Office of Student Involvement and Development will host multiple New Student Orientation sessions for first-time freshmen, transfer students and international students. Led by red-shirted new student orientation leaders, the incoming students will be welcomed to campus by CSUN President Dianne F. Harrison or her representative, participate in a campus tour, attend a service fair and a series of “small group discussions” with current students and campus leaders.
“The goal of New Student Orientation is to support the continuous process of integrating news students into the academic, cultural and social context of California State University, Northridge,” said Christopher Aston, assistant director of the Office of Student Involvement and Development. He said his office has gathered a diverse team of student employees and volunteers who are “guided by university, divisional and departmental goals and values” to make NSO a success.
His employees volunteer and train approximately 150 hours to prepare for NSO, Aston said.
Aston expects approximately 6,200 first-time freshmen, 500 first-time transfer students and 500 international transfer/graduate students to participate in the daylong orientation workshops.
The office will also host an orientation for the parents of the new students on Oct. 12.
